Race Results for 14th Annual Creek Classic
EDMOND/OKLAHOMA CITY, MARCH 7th, 2010 - The 14th Annual Creek Classic had 1642 runners this past Saturday, up 460 runners from last year! "The Creek Classic was a HUGE success!!! , exclaimed Stacy Edwards, Principal of Deer Creek Rose Union Elementary School.
Many things can be attributed to the success of this years race. The addition of an experienced avid runner as our Race Director. Several new committees were formed including a public relations committee to help increase race awareness. The weather was good and we had an outstanding amount of volunteers.
“More people pre-registered for this years' race online, and then came the day before the race for early packet pick-up which made race day go more smoothly!”, said Lisa Landon, Creek Classic Registration Coordinator.
The Creek Classic Expo was very successful as well. Vendors enjoyed the new location. Being in the same building with race registration, awards and the pancake breakfast increased traffic and customers. Silpada Jewelry Representative, Mendi Burns, said, “I did much better than I expected. We had a good location and I will do it again next year.”
The pancake breakfast hosted by Deer Creek Track Booster Club is always a big hit and it sets our race apart from other races. Katie Elcyzyn, a fifth grade student from Deer Creek Prairie Vale, said, “they were the best pancakes I have ever eaten.”
Our generous sponsors came on board despite the economy allowing us to increase our sponsorship contributions by 58% from the prior year. Thank you Kirkpatrick Bank, Flintco & Bill White and Associate, Petrohawk, Renaissance Architects, Starbuck, TRC Disaster Solutions, Clear Channel Communications Fox Sports Radio 1340 AM and all the other wonderful Creek Classic sponsors.
The amount of money raised is still being calculated. However, due to the increase in runners and sponsor dollars it will be more than last year. The money will be divided among all six schools based on each schools student population (per capita). Not only is this race a wonderful fundraiser for our schools, it promotes health and fitness to our students and community. This year all four elementary schools had running clubs leading up to the race offered to third-fifth grades. The running clubs taught students the importance of stretching, pacing, nutrition, and setting goals.
Bryce Wallace, a fifth grader from Deer Creek Prairie Vale Elementary, set his goal with the Prairie Vale Running Club to run the 5K in under 25 minutes. He met his goal finishing the 5K in 23 minutes and 51 seconds. Congratulation to Bryce and all the students who set and achieved their running goals on Saturday.
