Orientation and Locker Move-In:
Thursday, Aug 9th 6:00--8:00pm
Students and families are free to come up to DCMS the evening of Thursday, Aug 9th to walk through class schedules, practice opening the built-in locks on our lockers, move school supplies into lockers, decorate lockers, etc. (no adhesives and decorations only on the inside please). The building will be open to DCMS families for this purpose only, and this is an optional event.  Staff will not be present to assist with meeting teachers, picking up schedules, etc.  This is simply an evening where we will have an open building so parents have more time to assist their child with lockers and class schedule practice.  We will have a DCMS Parent Orientation in the cafeteria from 6:30--7:00pm for incoming 7th grade parents and new to DCMS families.  If you are unable to attend, do not worry.  Mrs. VanDorn will email a pdf of my slides to all DCMS families after that night.

An evening for parents to follow their child's schedule to meet teachers, to hear more about their classes, and to learn how we can partner together for a successful school year!

Don't Forget to Verify Residency!
We cannot give you your child's schedule until you prove that you currently reside in the district.  This is a state requirement for all public school students.  Please see full instructions from the District Office at the end of this email. Time is running out! Additional date added on July 31st to drop off your proof of residency at the DC Enrollment Center. See email for more details.

Don't Forget those Tdap Shots!
Incoming 7th graders and new students must show proof of the Tdap shot in your child's immunization records before we can give you your child's schedule.  This is also a state requirement.  Please drop off a copy of your shot record at the district office so that your child's schedule is not put on hold.  You can quickly obtain a Tdap shot at most pharmacies and convenient care clinics in the metro area.

Don't Forget to Complete Physicals and Rank One Profiles for Athletics!
Parents of student-athletes must complete the required online forms for participation:
See attached directions for Rank One assistance.

All athletes must have a current physical (dated after May 1, 2018) prior to the start of the school year in order to participate.  Failure to do so will result in a removal from our Athletics course.  Students also are not eligible to sign-up for after school club sports without a physical on file.  This is an OSSAA requirement for all athletes.  If you did not attend the DC-McBride Physical Night on May 7th, then you will need to obtain a physical for your child this summer at your primary care phycician's office or at any convenient care clinic.

PreAP US History:

Incoming 8th grade students who will be taking PreAP U.S. History next year need to complete the National History Day topic selection organizer (CLICK HERE FOR THE ASSIGNMENT). (assignment also attached as a pdf). This will assist students in determining what sparks their interest for this project. If there are any questions or assistance is needed please email Ashley Mackey at ashleymackey@dcsok.org.

PreAP Literature and Composition:

Incoming 8th grade students enrolled in PreAP Lit/Comp for 8th grade need to complete the attached summer reading project by the 1st day of school in August.

Dress Code Reminders
See attached Board Policy that outlines our expectations for student attire.  Over the years, we have made several changes in attempt to change with the current fashions and allow for student expression, but also teach students appropriateness when choosing what to wear to school.  Just like it is not appropriate for adults to wear certain items to work, church, ceremonies, formal events, etc......it is also not appropriate to wear certain items to school.  I tell kids all the time, "It's really very simple.  Private parts should remain private."

Here are some FAQ's that I typically receive from DCMS students and families:
1.  "Can we wear Nike and Lulu shorts? Can we wear cut-off  jean shorts?"  Yes, as long as they are a length that sufficiently covers the buttocks, even when bent over at a locker, climbing stairs, etc.  If we can see the buttocks, we will require that the student change clothes.  I highly recommend wearing slider shorts underneath all shorts and skirts.  We now have 5 staircases at DCMS!  Please help us prevent a very embarrassing exposure of your child at school.
2.  "Can we wear leggings?"  Yes, as long as private parts are covered.  Meaning, students need to wear a top that is long enough to sufficiently cover private areas when wearing leggings due to the nature of the tight apparel. I know that many women are wearing leggings now with shorter tops.  Leggings are not pants.  This is not an appropriate look especially in a school setting.
3.  "Can we wear off-the-shoulder tops, halter tops, racer back tops?"  Yes, as long as breasts, stomach, and back below the shoulder blades are covered.
4.  "Can we wear skirts?"  Yes, as long as buttocks is covered at all times, during all activities that occur at school......see FAQ #1.
5.  "Can we wear hats?"  No, only on designated "hat days" that may occur during spirit weeks.
6.  "Can I wear the marijuana socks that I found at the mall?"  No, see district expectations above.
7.  "What happens if I get dress-coded?"  Students that are not meeting the expectations above will be sent to the office to change clothes immediately.  If the student does not have an alternative clothing item with him/her, then we have a large trunk of clean Deer Creek shirts, shorts, and sweats that will be issued to the student.  It is our desire to protect instructional time and return the student to class as soon as possible.  We will take disciplinary actions with students that repeatedly choose not to follow our dress code.

School Supplies:
See attached lists....if you ordered a supply pack, it will be available at schedule pick-up on Aug 6th. Elective class supply lists will also be available on Aug 6th.
